The year 2011 marks the 250th anniversary of the voyage by Abraham Somes and James Richardson from Gloucester, Massachusetts to Mount Desert Island, and their establishment of a simple settlement in what is now Somesville. To commemorate this mark in time, a collaborative group of island organizations has developed plans for celebrating the anniversary year with a wide range of memorable, fun, educational events. The Celebrate!250 steering committee has issued an invitation for organizations to participate in the year-long celebration. The first step organizations should take is to sign a free license agreement which provides permission to use the Celebrate!250 logo and other promotional material.
The intent of Celebrate!250 is to look back over the full 250 years since Somes’ voyage and humble settlement, and to explore the development of the whole Island, with all the different villages, municipalities, and offshore islands included. Organizations, villages, businesses, chambers of commerce can participate by creating their own event or working with others for a collaborative effort.
Island organizations are invited to participate by:
- Organizing events around the theme and logo of Celebrate!250. By signing a license agreement, organizations will receive permission and access to use Celebrate!250 graphical material.
- Using Celebrate!250 graphical templates for posters, yard signs and other advertising.
- Posting events to the Celebrate!250 calendar, where events will be publicized along with other Celebrate!250 activities.
- Posting quick news, fun facts, and entertaining quips to the Celebrate!250 Facebook page.
- Using the a limited supply of print materials provided by the Celebrate!250 steering committee.
To receive the logo image file and start promoting your C!250 events, please mail the completed agreement to: Celebrate!250; Mount Desert Island Historical Society; PO Box 653; Mount Desert, ME 04660. For more information, contact Tim Garrity at 207-276-9323 or mdihistory@gmail.com.
