30th Anniversary Celebration - Wendell Gilley Museum
The Wendell Gilley Museum in Southwest Harbor marks its 30th anniversary this summer. Because the Museum is all about people, nature and art (and all the way these three elements relate), a threefold celebration is planned as follows:
Friday, July 22 -- PEOPLE
Birds of a feather will flock together for a party at The Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor. If you have already received an invitation, please send in your RSVP card. If not, contact the Museum to receive one. It will be an evening to share the great memories of the first 30 years and start to create new ones with longtime and recent friends.
Saturday, July 23 -- NATURE
Take a morning bird walk with Rich MacDonald, local ornithologist, bird carver, Wendell Gilley Museum member and owner of The Natural History Center in Bar Harbor. Search for early migrants and resident birds during a leisurely 8-10 am field trip. Rich smoothly weaves a tapestry of bird identification and natural history into a background of the human landscape, all in an educating, if not entertaining, manner. Participation is free, but space is limited, so please call the Museum for details and reservations.
Sunday, July 24 -- ART
Admission is free to the general public all day today (10 am – 4:30 pm) as a 30th anniversary gift to the community that made the Wendell Gilley Museum's first 30 years soar. Enjoy the art work that is part of our local heritage and the works on loan from around the world in the current Birds in Art exhibition on loan from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. For more about the exhibition see: http://www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/exhibits/exhibits.html

Lecture - Acadia Senior College - College of the Atlantic (Gates)
July 25 at 5:00 - The Music of Acadia by Dr. David Schildkret. Mount Desert Island and the Downeast region of Maine have long been a haven for artists of all kinds--but especially for musicians. Horatio Parker, the composer best remembered as Charles Ives's somewhat bemused teacher, summered at Blue Hill from 1907 on. Walter Damrosch, a seminal figure in promoting high musical culture in the first half of the twentieth century, first visited in 1917 and summered here until his home was destroyed in the 1947 fire. He is buried in Ledgelawn Cemetery, and his descendants still visit here. The great conductor Pierre Monteux, who conducted the premiere of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in Paris, settled in Hancock in 1942, where he created the conducting school that still bears his name. More recently, Erich Kunzel, the noted American pops conductor, summered on Swan's Island until his death--in the Mount Desert Island Hospital--in 2009 at the age of 74. This talk looks at some of the musicians and musical organizations, famous and not so famous, who have helped to shape the cultural life of this unique enclave.
